The CS/LR17/CS/LR18 modular automatic rifles are a series of “next-generation” modular automatic rifle systems developed by Norinco, a subsidiary of China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (NORINCO), and marketed by China Construction Industry Corporation (CCIC). The CS/LR17 fires 5.56×45mm NATO caliber rifle cartridges, while the CS/LR18 fires 7.62×39mm Soviet caliber or 7.62×51mm NATO caliber rifle cartridges. The 5.56×45mm and 7.62×39mm cartridges are for assault rifles, while the 7.62×51mm cartridge is for battle rifles.
The CS/LR17/CS/LR18 series has several derivatives, though their names have changed: the NAR-XXX/S (assault rifle) with a standard rifle length; the NAR-XXX/CQC (short-barreled assault rifle) with a shortened barrel, resembling a carbine; the NAR-XXX/HB (marksman rifle) with a heavier barrel, resembling a sniper rifle; and the NAR-XXX/LMG (squad automatic weapon) with prolonged firing like a machine gun.
