The VT5 light tank is 7.5 meters long, 3.3 meters wide, and 2.5 meters high, with a crew of three and a combat weight of 36 tons. Its power system utilizes a new 150 series 8-cylinder diesel engine and a new generation integrated hydraulic transmission, producing a maximum power of 1000 horsepower and a maximum speed of 70 km/h. It can wade through water to a depth of 1.2 meters without equipment. The integrated engine compartment facilitates maintenance and replacement. It employs an advanced hydropneumatic suspension system similar to that of the Japanese Type 10 main battle tank, allowing for lowering the tank’s height in special situations, making it ideal for combat in complex terrains such as mountains, especially in high-altitude areas.
The main sighting and fire control system uses a top-mounted stabilized aiming system, a small laser warning device, and is equipped with a gunner’s sight and a commander’s panoramic sight, both equipped with thermal imaging channels. These gunner’s sights integrate laser rangefinders and infrared night vision devices. A crosswind observation device is mounted on the roof, enabling firing on the move. All crew members are equipped with periscopes.
The VT5 light tank’s main armament is a British-derived L7 105mm rifled gun, capable of penetrating up to 700mm of homogeneous steel armor at 2000 meters. It carries 38 rounds of ammunition, with 18 stored in the autoloader, achieving a rate of fire of 7-9 rounds per minute. It is equipped with a muzzle extractor and thermal sleeve. The remote weapon station mounts a 12.7mm machine gun and a Type 04 35mm grenade launcher.
The VT5 light tank features a modular design and can be equipped with the GL5 active protection system, an advanced defense system produced by Norinco. This system automatically searches, detects, tracks, identifies, and destroys targets, requiring only electricity. It can engage high-speed projectiles within a 360-degree range, at a maximum distance of 100 meters, and can attack at distances of 1.5 to 10 meters. Additionally, it includes a Golden Eagle 5A vehicle-mounted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) module, allowing the UAV to take off from the tank and assist in monitoring the surrounding battlefield environment.
